An agent-based model to support the preliminary design and operation of heating and power grids with cogeneration units and photovoltaic panels in de…

2022

The increase in the energy demands of residential neighborhoods constitutes a huge challenge to be faced. A viable option lies in the insertion of both renewable energy production systems and cogeneration units within urban territories. On-site production allows for the satisfaction of the heating and electrical demands of end-users and favors the distribution of produced energy within the neighborhood, especially under the regulatory framework of energy communities. This paper proposes a tool to model heating and electricity networks integrated with cogeneration units and PV panels installed in urban areas. The tool accounts for the following possibilities: (i) energy flow management and p…

A simulation of disagreement for control of rational cheating in peer review

2013

Understanding the peer review process could help research and shed light on the mechanisms that underlie crowdsourcing. In this paper, we present an agent-based model of peer review built on three entities - the paper, the scientist and the conference. The system is implemented on a BDI platform (Jason) that allows to define a rich model of scoring, evaluating and selecting papers for conferences. Then, we propose a programme committee update mechanism based on disagreement control that is able to remove reviewers applying a strategy aimed to prevent papers better than their own to be accepted (rational cheating). We analyze a homogeneous scenario, where all conferences aim to the same leve…

DRESS: A Distributed RMS Evaluation Simulation Software

2020

Distributed environments consist of a huge number of entities that cooperate to achieve complex goals. When interactions occur between unknown parties, intelligent techniques for estimating agent reputations are required. Reputation management systems (RMS's) allow agents to perform such estimation in a cooperative way. In particular, distributed RMS's exploit feedbacks provided after each interaction and allow prediction of future behaviors of agents. Such systems, in contrast to centralized RMSs, are sensitive to fake information injected by malicious users; thus, predicting the performance of a distributed RMS is a very challenging task. Although many existing works have addressed some c…

Reputation or peer review? The role of outliers

2018

We present an agent-based model of paper publication and consumption that allows to study the effect of two different evaluation mechanisms, peer review and reputation, on the quality of the manuscripts accessed by a scientific community. The model was empirically calibrated on two data sets, mono- and multi-disciplinary. Our results point out that disciplinary settings differ in the rapidity with which they deal with extreme events—papers that have an extremely high quality, that we call outliers. In the mono-disciplinary case, reputation is better than traditional peer review to optimize the quality of papers read by researchers. In the multi-disciplinary case, if the quality landscape is…

Towards human cell simulation

2019

The faithful reproduction and accurate prediction of the phe-notypes and emergent behaviors of complex cellular systems are among the most challenging goals in Systems Biology. Although mathematical models that describe the interactions among all biochemical processes in a cell are theoretically feasible, their simulation is generally hard because of a variety of reasons. For instance, many quantitative data (e.g., kinetic rates) are usually not available, a problem that hinders the execution of simulation algorithms as long as some parameter estimation methods are used. Though, even with a candidate parameterization, the simulation of mechanistic models could be challenging due to the extr…

An ACE Wholesale Electricity Market Framework with Bilateral Trading

2011

In this paper, an agent-based simulation model for a hybrid power market structure is presented. A bilateral transaction mechanism is combined with a uniform-pricing auction settlement in order to isolate the impact of medium-term bilateral contracts on market power and spot prices in a competitive wholesale market setting. First we describe the negotiation method for bilateral trading of energy and then introduce a new approach for bidding in the DA market based on the load duration curve. We find that, despite the conventional concerns, the foreclosure effect produced by the bilateral agreement between a generation and a retail business will not necessarily lead to higher prices, and will…

Mechanism change in a simulation of peer review: from junk support to elitism

2014

Abstract Peer review works as the hinge of the scientific process, mediating between research and the awareness/acceptance of its results. While it might seem obvious that science would regulate itself scientifically, the consensus on peer review is eroding; a deeper understanding of its workings and potential alternatives is sorely needed. Employing a theoretical approach supported by agent-based simulation, we examined computational models of peer review, performing what we propose to call redesign, that is, the replication of simulations using different mechanisms. Here, we show that we are able to obtain the high sensitivity to rational cheating that is present in literature. In additio…

A Platform for the Evaluation of Distributed Reputation Algorithms

2018

In distributed environments, where unknown entities cooperate to achieve complex goals, intelligent techniques for estimating agents' truthfulness are required. Distributed Reputation Management Systems (RMSs) allow to accomplish this task without the need for a central entity that may represent a bottleneck and a single point of failure. The design of a distributed RMS is a challenging task due to a multitude of factors that could impact on its performances. In order to support the researcher in evaluating the RMS robustness against security attacks since its beginning design phase, in this work we present a distributed simulation environment that allows to model both the agent's behaviors…

Work Partitioning on Parallel and Distributed Agent-Based Simulation

2017

Work partitioning is a key challenge with ap- plications in many scientific and technological fields. The problem is very well studied with a rich literature on both distributed and parallel computing architectures. In this paper we deal with the work partitioning problem for parallel and distributed agent-based simulations which aims at (i) balancing the overall load distribution, (ii) minimizing, at the same time, the communication overhead due to agents' inter-dependencies. We introduce a classification taxonomy of work partitioning strategies and present a space-based work partitioning ap- proach, based on a Quad-tree data structure, which enables to: identify a good space partitioning …

Towards a Real-time Mitigation of High Temperature while Drilling using a Multi-agent System

2018

International audience; In oilfield wells, while drilling for several kilometers below surface, high temperature damages the drilling tools. This costs money and time for tripping operations to change the damaged tool. Existing temperature mitigation techniques have several drawbacks including a long response time, analogue signal issues and human intervention. In this work, we empower the down-hole tools with a coordination mechanism to mitigate high temperature in soft real time by controlling a down-hole actuator through a voting process. The tools are represented by agents that control the sensors and actuators embedded in these tools. To implement the proposed system properly, a model …
